The third industrial revolution
Just reading the economist special report april 21 st – 27th, about the rise of 3D printing…
This is certainly a topic to follow, an emerging technology that will have a major impact in uk & developing countries.
Just think about the “replicator” on star trek!
Keep website software up to date or suffer!
There has been a number of cases recently of wordpress, joomla and drupal content management systems being compromised by 3rd parties. Or put another way – hacked!
This highlights a serious issue when considering a hosting deal for your website; who is going to keep your software up to date?
You can get magical deals on hosting, but the true cost (and one which is never taken into account), is that like all ‘systems’ you need to factor in the ‘maintenance’ of the website, and I’m not just talking about updating articles and pictures, I’m talking about keeping the software AND any plugins up to date.
This is crucial to protect your website and corporate image.
Over at 247hosting.co.uk the monthly cost is above the cheap deals, but INCLUDES keeping the core software up to date.
As it happens, 247hosting.co.uk clients tend to be small and medium enterprises, charities and ‘not for profits’ so they keep a watchful eye on the software used by the clients.
Over at 247Design.net, after setting up the software and design as any other design agency would do; they also keep an eye on the installed plugins to ensure the clients are protected.
So between us we offer a better service and the true cost is very reasonable after all!
Is this a WordPress plugin problem?
I recently viewed a website that was using WordPress.
I liked the look of the template so – as I do – I looked at the source code for the page, I know it’s a geeky thing to do.
I found the template name OK but, I also saw a potential problem in the code:-
In the <head> …. </head> area, where all the meta stuff and script stuff goes, there was a bit of code that introduced another <head> … </head> code! This didn’t seem to make any difference to the ‘look’ of the page, however, it could have severly damaged the SEO for the site!
I believe the code was introduced from a plugin – I’ll not say which in case I cause a stir, and I need to follow up to see if it’s been addressed already, but the plugin hasn’t kept pace.
This leads me to another problem area for people with websites – keeping software and plugins up to date! see next article…
