Keep website software up to date or suffer!

There has been a number of cases recently of wordpress, joomla and drupal content management systems being compromised by 3rd parties. Or put another way – hacked!

This highlights a serious issue when considering a hosting deal for your website; who is going to keep your software up to date?

You can get magical deals on hosting, but the true cost (and one which is never taken into account), is that like all ‘systems’ you need to factor in the ‘maintenance’ of the website, and I’m not just talking about updating articles and pictures, I’m talking about keeping the software AND any plugins up to date.

This is crucial to protect your website and corporate image.

Over at 247hosting.co.uk the monthly cost is above the cheap deals, but INCLUDES keeping the core software up to date.

As it happens, 247hosting.co.uk clients tend to be small and medium enterprises, charities and ‘not for profits’ so they keep a watchful eye on the software used by the clients.

Over at 247Design.net, after setting up the software and design as any other design agency would do; they also keep an eye on the installed plugins to ensure the clients are protected.

So between us we offer a better service and the true cost is very reasonable after all!

How long does it take to update Joomla?

Like most of these questions, the answer is – ‘it depends!’

Only last week I created two Joomla installations for a client on their existing hosting provider’s system for a further two new websites. It was a similar system to our own, that is it had a cPanel control system at the back end, so I was able to FTP an up to date version of Joomla v1.5.21.

It took nearly 2.5 hours to complete with demo data and a Template for each from siteground.com to give them a good start in life.

This week I received multiple automatic emails from our own system which includes ‘Installatron’ informing me that the numerous websites I look after, and are built using the award winning Joomla Content Management System (CMS), required an immediate update to version 1.5.22 as it had just been released to fix a security issue.

It took under 1 hour for ‘one click’ backup and update to about 15 websites using the Joomla! CMS through the Installatron system. A major time-saver if ever I’ve seen one! Also, I won’t be billing my clients for this activity.

Suffice to say, I’m not looking forward to ‘manually’ upgrading the client’s 3 websites, and the client won’t be pleased to see my invoice either!
